The project

The aim of this project is to study and design a system for the real-time monitoring of single-vehicle emissions. In a typical scenario, a road gate is equipped with sensors measuring different components of the pollution generated by vehicles (e.g., NOx, Black Carbon, particulate, noise) and weather conditions. Moreover, video cameras are present to identify every vehicle and observe its dynamics. The information on vehicle type, pollutant concentration, vehicle dynamics and weather conditions is used to estimate, by means of emission models, the actual contribution of each vehicle to the total pollution.

The acquired data are stored for successive processing and statistical analysis. This allows the system to identify potential “high emitters” by selecting vehicles whose transits were repeatedly observed to increase the amount of pollution near the gate. For every vehicle which has been identified as a possible high emitter, an emission check may be requested by traffic authorities.
