Milano Ricerche, thanks to its close bonds with the associated companies and universities, has acquired strong competencies in the following areas:

1. Innovation centre

The structure of Milano Ricerche is highly competent in the design and management of industrial research projects and the valorization of their results, along the following lines:

Support industrial in particular (SME) and academic members of Milano Ricerche in their IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) strategy;

Support university and research groups towards the estabiliment of start-up companies;

Support local governments in their strategies of environmental monitoring and reorientation of industrial activities.

2. Information & Comunication Tecnology (ICT)

A core competence of Milano Ricerche is Data, Web and Text Mining. A leading edge Software platform Bayes (Bayesian AnalYsis & Evidence Sampling) has been developed since 2001 leading to a set of computational libraries. This approch is being focused on Vertical applications for Customer Relationship Management and Recommend Systems in the project Web Smart and on supply chain management in the project SFIDA. These proprietary software components have been put to use in the area of Video Surveillance working for Comerson, a member company of Milano Ricerche, and in the area ST e-businness working with another member company TXT. Milano Ricerche is active in machine learning methods for knowledge management e. g. Wisper, customer profiling and business proactive multi agent systems. Another competence of Milano Ricerche is in Numerical Optimization: a number of applications as well as a new business model as Applications Service Provider (ASP) has been tested in the european project OSP. In all these projects Milano Ricerche has a strong cooperation with Disco-Unimib, who is coordinating Atelier (Architecture and Technologies for Inspiration Learning Envronments).

3. Life Sciences

In this sector of activities Milano Ricerche has two main competences. -Information and Statistics to support clinical trials and observational studies including Adverse Drug Reactions. -Computational Methods for Rational Drug Design: in this area Milano Ricerche along with Unimib hold a patent DELOS (Discovery and Lead Optimization System). A major project has been set up in cooperation with Regione Lombardia “Sperimentazione di un modello consortile tra Università di Milano-Bicocca, PMI Biofarmaceutiche, Enti locali ed ospedalieri per l’implementazione di piattaforme informatiche nel campo dello sviluppo di nuovi farmaci e della diagnosi”.

4. Energy and Environment

Milano A traditional core competence is the analysis of industrial process, the development of clean technologies and the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of manufactured products. This activity has been performed in two projects RAFMETAL and ECOZINC. Environmental remediation is the other core activitiy of Milano Ricerche including the design of specific molecules to degrade hazardous substances. In this case Milano Ricerche can use its system DELOS.

4. Material Sciences

Gas Sensors have always been a core competence of Milano Ricerche in this area. Innovative sensors have been developed in EUCLID in cooperation with St Microeletronics. Sensor Networks are now receving increasing attention: Milano Ricerche will leverage its experience in Data Fusion and Integration towards Wireless Mobile Sensor Network for Environmental and Security Applications. Sensor array are now being prototyped in order the increase accuracy and selectivity along with a software propietary based on the components of Bayes. An optimization based computational procedure on DELOS is being used to design at the molecules level the most suitable substrate
